This summer, Mercedes-Benz South West is taking you on a Sustainable Summer Road Trip across the West Country, all behind the wheel of our
electric and hybrid vehicles. The next stop on our tour of the South West brings us to Plymouth and West Devon. Known for its maritime heritage, Britain’s Ocean City has plenty to offer whether you’re looking for city life, beach vibes or countryside exploring.
We were joined by local Tennis influencer and
Just Ball Tennis Coach, Josh Brown who was excited to take us out in the all-electric
Mercedes EQA. Growing up in Tavistock, Josh was the ideal tour guide to show us around the area, even on a wet and wild day out on the moors.

West Devon and Dartmoor:
Being with a tennis influencer, we couldn’t miss the chance to take on a rally or two.

We headed to the outdoor tennis court at Bere Ferrers so Josh could show us some of his skills. A 30 minute drive from the
Mercedes-Benz of Plymouth dealership, Bere Ferrers is a lovely village sat on the bank of the River Tavy.

Our next stop was the
Two Bridges Hotel, nestled in the heart of
Dartmoor National Park.
Surrounded by the beautiful Devon countryside and with idyllic moorland views, the Two Bridges is the perfect place to visit if you want to see Devon at its finest. We enjoyed a delicious cream tea with jam and local clotted cream by
Langage Farm. Of course, we couldn’t have a cream tea without asking the ‘what goes first’ question! Despite being a Devon local, Josh prefers his cream tea the Cornish way… jam first! There are also lots of walks to take on from the hotel so you can discover more of Dartmoor and its rugged landscape by foot.
There are plenty of other beauty spots to discover in West Devon including many other towns and villages across Dartmoor such as Tavistock. Tavistock is an ancient market town filled with lots of local eateries and independent shops. Other places to discover locally include
Burrator Reservoir and
Brent Tor Church.
Plymouth:
After finishing up our cream tea, we headed back to Plymouth in the EQA. Plymouth has plenty of electric charging points across the city including several supermarkets, the home of
Plymouth Argyle and at the
Theatre Royal Plymouth (all plug in points vary). There are also a number of electric charging points on the route back from Dartmoor into the city should you want to charge up on route.

Many visit the city to see Smeaton’s Tower at the centre of Plymouth Hoe or to go to the
National Marine Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the UK. We decided to finish up our day in Plymouth by heading towards the historic Barbican and catching the
ferry service (also powered by electric) across to the
Mount Batten Peninsula. The centre point of the Mount Batten view is the Mount Batten Tower.

The tower was built in the 17
th century and is now used as part of educational ventures and is also a licensed wedding venue. Mount Batten is also a great place to join the
South West Coast Path from Plymouth.
Plymouth is just a stone’s throw from some of the most idyllic beaches in Devon. Wembury beach is a short drive from the city as is Bovisand beach. A little bit further down the coast and in the South Hams district is Hope Cove. Made up of two sandy beach areas, this beauty spot is perfect for building sand castles, exploring rock pools and paddle boarding in the bay. If you’re hungry, the
Lobster Pod Bistro offers picturesque views and a local seafood menu you can enjoy in the comfort of your own private pod.
Where to stay:
Not only does the Two Bridges offer a great cream tea, it is also a lovely place to spend the night.

Along with its sister hotel
The Bedford in Tavistock, the Two Bridges offers luxury and traditional rooms with stunning views. If you wanted to bring your dog along, both hotels accommodate for this too.
If you’re looking to stay in the city, the
Copthorne Hotel is situated in the city centre and is a short walk away from the Barbican and the iconic Mayflower steps.
